Twelfth Generation

18. Robert WILBERFOSS. "We have in the above a dry catalogue of names covering the generations from 1175 to 1445, and as often happens in these old pedigrees there is confusion between one generation and another. In the mediaeval period pedigree keeping as such was hardly indulged in, and such entries as we find relating to a family are usually in connection with land. Consequently what matters is that there should be continuity of a family in a place and property as there is here; and this is recognised in the notes appended by the herald to the pedigree as it is given in the 1584 Visitation.

“All these heirs descended in turn, heir after heir, who all died and occupied the sake of Catton, containing 6 vills, namely Catton, Boll, Burton, Sutton, Wilberfosse, Newton, which were held by John Percy, and (by) the same John of the Earl of Chester, in scutage (payment in lieu of personal military service). In the vill of Wilberfoss are 6 carucates (oxgangs) of land, 5 of which are held of Philip Kyme (by) the same Philip of John Percy and (by) the same John of the aforesaid Earl, and (by) the Early of the King and the whole residue (the 6th Carucate).” - L G Pine

There is some disagreement over the next two generations. According to the records of the Visitation 1584, the third consecutive John had a son Robert, whose son John had William and Roger. This version is given here. However BLG skips from the third John directly to William and Roger. - ed
