20. William WILBERFOSS. "William de Wilberfoss, of Harthill, Yorks, ... refused to take up a knighthood and was accordingly fined 16 Henry VII 1500. In old families one often comes across this type of detail. In days when direct payment of income tax did not exist, the Government resorted to various means to gather revenue. One of the most curious of these was the offer of a knighthood with option of refusal on payment of a fine. The refusal was less expensive than acceptance. Fortunately for posterity Governmental interference has meant a great increase in record keeping and from the Tudor period onwards the bare names can usually be supplemented with some details which give us a human being instead of a mere name."
